Periodontal Maintenance

How we partner with you to prevent gum disease and preserve your healthy, brilliant smile

At Liberty Dental Group in Brentwood, California, we are all about being proactive. In partnership with you and your family, we support the health of the gums. In maintaining gum (periodontal) health, you avoid the pain and other symptoms of gum inflammation or disease. Periodontal maintenance also prevents the development of severe gum disease and the need for more extensive or invasive treatments to protect the tooth from being lost or to regenerate lost bone and gum tissue.

Healthy gums for healthy teeth

Gummy tissue supports and protects your teeth. Healthy gums are secure around the teeth and appear pinkish-red. Gums that are redder than your “usual” can indicate the presence of periodontal disease. Likewise, gums that are pale or lighter than usual can indicate health concerns, such as anemia.

You can protect the health of your teeth and gums with consistent, daily, thorough oral care. Patients tend to brush the visible teeth in the smile quite well. They may fail to brush other areas or structures adequately, including the gums. The tongue and soft palate also harbor the bacteria that mix with the lingering food debris in the mouth to create acidic plaque. Bacterial plaque then attacks the hard tissues, eroding the structure of the tooth from the outside (enamel) inward to the dentin layer and then the pulp where the nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue reside. Plaque also releases toxins that inflame the gums. Without treatment, this toxic process breaks down the gums and the bone that supports the teeth.

Patients also tend not to prioritize flossing as much as they should. You can be an excellent and diligent brusher, but you still need to floss! The toothbrush can only touch and remove so much. It’s estimated that one-third of each tooth’s surface is missed when you fail to floss as recommended by your dentist, at least once each day.

A true partnership

Even those patients who care for their teeth and gums consistently with brushing and flossing still need to visit our hygiene team, too! Healthy patients who are not at increased risk of developing gum disease, oral cancers, tooth decay, or other dental-related conditions should schedule a checkup once every six months. Our dental hygienists are trained to use specialized techniques and tools to remove stubborn, hardened plaque. Once plaque has built up and hardened into tartar, your toothbrush and floss alone cannot remove it. These routine visits also maintain fresh breath, an attractive, stain-free smile, and overall oral health. During these visits, Drs Mike or Emily will examine your teeth, gums, and other structures to identify problems early when they can be quickly and successfully resolved with our services or hygiene recommendations.

Patients with active disease or other risk factors will generally visit us for hygiene care and evaluation every three to four months. Depending on your needs, deep cleaning or scaling and root planing may be performed to encourage healthy healing and reattachment of the gums to the teeth.
