Resolve toothaches and restore a healthy smile with prompt extractions

Our dentists, Drs Mike Molosky and Emily Molosky work closely with individuals and families in and around Brentwood, Oakley, Antioch, Bridgehead, Sandhill, Discovery Bay, and Bethel Island, California. They get to know and remain up-to-date on each person’s unique and evolving needs and circumstances. In this manner, at Liberty Dental Group, we are able to avoid many of the conditions that ultimately lead to tooth loss or dental extractions.

These conditions include:

  • Severe tooth decay
  • Extensive trauma or cracks
  • Advanced gum disease, which erodes the attachments between the teeth and gums and supportive bone
  • Persistent signs of infection following root canal therapy
  • Teeth that do not respond well to other endodontic procedures

Healthy teeth are built on a solid foundation of routine hygiene appointments. During these appointments, our hygienists gently and expertly remove those lingering food particles and substances that give rise to the leading causes of tooth loss: decay and periodontal (gum) disease. Our dentists also use their considerable knowledge and x-rays to detect problems early before they lead to severe damage that ultimately threatens the health and structure of the tooth. Even some forms of trauma, such as injuries to the teeth that result from contact during sports, can be prevented with services such as custom mouthguards. These oral appliances also protect the jaws and other oral tissues from damage and may reduce the risk of concussion.

Additionally, during these ongoing dental check-ups, we monitor the development of oral structures. Notably, the third molars often do not have sufficient space to develop correctly in the mouth because they are the last teeth to erupt or break through the gums. Better known as “wisdom teeth,” this situation increases the risk of the molars becoming “impacted.” When this complication arises, it can produce intense pain and pressure and may damage surrounding teeth and tissues. Since we detect potential developmental problems early, our dentists can make proactive decisions. They may recommend removing the tooth before it causes a persistent toothache and other disruptive symptoms. Toothaches caused by impacted wisdom teeth or from deep decay or progressive gum disease also represent one of the most common reasons patients visit us for emergency care. By supporting your oral health, you avoid the stress and pain associated with the need for emergency care and related painful conditions.

If removing the tooth is the best way to restore your health and resolve pain, the extraction process is straightforward and performed on a thoroughly numbed tooth. We can also discuss sedative options for your utmost comfort. The tooth is then slightly rocked back and forth and lifted from its socket. For teeth that need a little more help in being removed, our dentists may section the troublesome tooth. It may be easier to remove the tooth that way in sections.

It’s critical to follow any instructions provided by your dentist for after-care. After extraction, the biggest threat is a dry socket, which occurs when the blood clot that forms at the extraction site is dislodged. You can prevent this by avoiding any actions that may dislodge the clot; for instance, refraining from behaviors such as using straws or from smoking (which also interferes with healing).
